    "DEATH AND TAXES"

    Speaker: Jane Becker, Esq.

Tax attorney, Jane Becker, will review how to resolve a decedent's outstanding tax issues (unfiled and/or unpaid filings) including the non-reporting of offshore assets with an emphasis on doing so as quickly and expeditiously as possible. Jane will also review pre-death and post-death steps that can be taken to minimize income tax to the trust/estate during administration, along with a brief discussion of why the tax provisions in a revocable trust can hurt, or help, ultimate beneficiaries.

    Mindfulness for the Legal Profession

The people that are drawn to the legal profession are also people that are prone to stress and self-destructive behaviors. Learning to manage stress can help with managing the tendency to turn to self-destructive behaviors in times of difficulty. This mindfulness session will cover some fundamental reasons we become stressed, and the basics of various meditation and mindfulness techniques. We will also have a meditation session to wrap up the session.

    About the speaker: Joy McMurtry

Joy McMurtry is a Chief Deputy Public Defender with Monterey County.  McMurtry has been with the county for 15 and ½ years, and before that was a Public Defender in Wyoming for 5 years and a prosecutor for 4 years. In addition to her legal work, McMurtry is an avid photographer, a Pilates and Zumba Instructor, and practices Mindfulness. She was fortunate enough to have attended a Mindfulness in Law Teacher Training in 2020, just prior to the pandemic. Since that time, McMurtry has been involved in regular mindfulness training, presenting CLE training, providing countywide mindfulness sessions, conducting daily meditation sessions for the Monterey County Public Defender staff, and practicing on her own.
